To help
celebrate their 50th anniversary, the members of
United
Church Women (UCW) are launching Ordinary Heroes
(March,
2012). Through the stories of the extraordinary women,
the book
recounts the history of the UCW since its formation in
1962. Some
stories tell of raising millions of dollars for the
Mission and
Service Fund; some recount the “smaller” actions of
serving a
local need; other stories tell of the strength of these
women as
they led the way through decades of social change and
embraced new
causes for justice. In each story the four pillars of
the UCW
purpose—witness, study, fellowship, and service—
have guided
this amazing group of women whose overriding
mission has
been to love God and to love their neighbours.

tax included. Please call the church office to order your

GENERAL COUNCIL STEWARD
The 41st
General Council will be meeting in Ottawa at
Carleton
University – on August 11-18, 2012. Many people will be volunteering to
serve a variety of positions during this event. This includes a
hard-working group known as Stewards.
Stewards will
be working on the floor of the meeting each day during the General
Council. They collate materials, distribute documents, deliver messages,
and serve as ushers. They fill a key role in assisting the work of the
Council to flow smoothly. It is at times hard work, with long hours. But
it is also an opportunity to experience the Council first hand.
Interested people should
complete an
application form available at the church office and send via email to
ksmart@united-church.ca or fax to 416-231-3103 Deadline for
applications
March 23,
2012.

HUMOUR
A young man
who wants to see the world signs on to a tramp
steamer to be trained as a helmsman.
He masters the classroom instruction, then starts his practical
training on the wheel of the vessel. In his first lesson, the mate
gives him a heading, and the young fellow holds to it.
Then the mate orders, "Come starboard."
Pleased at knowing immediately which way starboard is, the
young man leaves the helm and walks over to his instructor.
The mate has an incredulous look on his face as the helm
swings freely. Then, rather gently considering the circumstance,
he asks politely, "Could you bring the ship with you?"
My parents
recently retired. Mom always wanted to learn to
play the piano, so dad bought her a piano for her birthday.
A few weeks later, I asked how she was doing with it.
"Oh, we returned the piano." said My Dad, "I persuaded her
to switch to a clarinet instead."
"How come?" I asked.
"Because," he answered, "with a clarinet, she can't sing."
My teenaged
niece Elizabeth was nervous as she took the
wheel for her first driving lesson. As she was pulling
out of the parking lot, the instructor said, "Turn left
here, and don't forget to let the people behind you know
what you're doing."
Elizabeth turned to the students sitting in the backseat
and announced, "I'm going left." |
