Mission Statement:

We aim to be a vital, dynamic and caring congregation. We are called to love God, and serve humanity, and support each other. We strive to live and grow in the knowledge and example of Jesus Christ.

Church History:

Earliest recorded date is May 1876, when meetings were held in family homes, under the leadership of Rev. D.L. Creelman, a Presbyterian Minister.

The practice of meeting in family homes continued until 1889.

First building was built in 1889 and deeded to the Halifax Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church.

Following the outbreak of the First World War, cooperation with the Methodist Church, which led to the union with the United Church of Canada on June 10, 1925.

The construction the pulp and paper mill in 1923 brought a great influx of people to Corner Brook from all over the province, Canada and England.

The Odd Fellows Hall was opened and dedicated and became the first piece of property in the district held in the name of the United Church of Canada.

During the ministry of Rev. C.R. Blount 1926-27, the pastoral charge became financially self-supporting. The present manse was also built at that time, and has been maintained in the same structure and design.

The sod was turned for the present building on June 11, 1937 and the corner stone was laid on June 29, 1941. Because of the war effort, the building was not dedicated until September 8, 1946.

The gymnasium and education center was completed on in 1958.

Over the past ten years we have undertaken an extensive restoration of our building and have spent over $400,000. In addition to this we have installed and paid for a new pipe organ, costing in excess of $367,000.00.

Since our beginnings in 1876, 23 ministers and 15 Assistant or Associate Ministers have served at First United.
